What it is

Understanding growth hormone deficiency.

Adult growth hormone deficiency is a medical condition in which the body does not make enough growth hormone. Fatigue, reduced muscle, increased body fat, or slower recovery are not enough to diagnose it, so careful testing and exclusion of other causes are essential.

How it works

What this service actually does.

Growth hormone is made by the pituitary gland and helps regulate growth, body composition, bone, muscle, and metabolism. In adults, a true deficiency is usually related to pituitary or hypothalamic disease, surgery, radiation, injury, or another medical cause—not simply normal aging.

Because random growth-hormone levels are difficult to interpret, diagnosis may require IGF-1 testing and, when appropriate, specialized stimulation testing. Treatment is considered only after the diagnosis is established.

What care may include

Specific evaluation and treatment options.

01

Evaluation for pituitary history and other causes of fatigue or body-composition change

02

IGF-1 and other hormone testing, with specialized testing or referral when needed

03

Prescription growth hormone for confirmed deficiency, using individualized dosing and ongoing monitoring

How care works

Evaluation first. Then a personal plan.

01

Review symptoms, health history, medications, and other possible causes

02

Order clinically appropriate hormone testing and additional evaluation when indicated

03

Discuss treatment and monitoring only when a true medical deficiency is confirmed

Possible improvements

What treatment may help with.

Results depend on the underlying cause, your health, and the treatment selected. When care is appropriate, the goals may include:

Important medical note

Growth hormone is not a general anti-aging treatment. Prescription therapy is used only for a medically diagnosed indication and requires monitoring.
